Breastfeeding – practical tips

Less pain, better flow, more calm. Start with the latch — it usually has the biggest impact.

Latch (the biggest lever)

Small adjustments can make a big difference for pain and milk transfer.

Nose to nipple

  • Wait for a wide gape before bringing baby in.
  • Support neck/shoulders — avoid pushing the back of the head.

Chin first

  • Chin touches first, then the mouth “rolls” on.
  • Often more areola visible above than below.

Pain?

  • Break suction with a finger and relatch.
  • Switch positions: laid-back / side-lying / football hold.

Reduce mental load

Plumpy helps you remember side, duration and quick notes — useful while testing latch and positions.

Positions that often improve latch

Choose the one that supports you and keeps baby calm.

Laid-back

Reclined, tummy-to-tummy. Gravity helps.

Cross-cradle

Great control for newborns. Support neck/shoulders.

Side-lying

Night-friendly. Baby close, nose level with the nipple before latching.

Pumping (simple start)

Pumping can be a supplement, relief, or flexibility.

When it helps

  • Support supply if needed
  • Gentle relief for engorgement
  • Build a small freezer stash

Practical tips

  • Correct flange size matters
  • Start gentle, increase gradually
  • Warmth + calm can help letdown
